4 Ways to Make Your Business Office Healthier

As a business leader, you understand how important it is to make your work environment a great place for yourself and your employees. You’ve seen other businesses where no one cares about each other, where morale is low and stress is high, and that’s the last thing you want for your business. Not only because it’s damaging to your success over time, but also because you care about the people you work with. You’ve got a busy schedule, and whether that’s because you’re choosing the right suppliers for ecommerce or spending hours improving your social media presence, you still want to make time for health in the office. So you’re taking time out to implement a strategy for your office.

And there are some great ways to make your business office healthier. They don’t have to be pricey, they don’t have to take up too much time–all you need is for them to work, and here’s how.

1 Encourage walks and stretches

We’ve all heard it before, and we’ll surely hear it again: sitting is bad for your health. But in an office, where you’re spending the regular nine to five at your desk, this unhealthy habit is unavoidable. That’s why it’s so important to encourage your employees to walk and do stretches. Schedule stretches throughout the day (which might be awkward at first, but eventually something everyone looks forward to). And during your lunch break, encourage people to go out for a walk.

And even if it loses you another hour or thirty minutes, consider giving employees a walking break in the afternoon. Even though it sounds counterintuitive, this is likely to make them more productive, especially after the post-lunch slump. They’ll come back feeling pumped, happy, and ready to take on those last few hours of the day. And you’ll be doing them real good: walking for 2.5 hours a week can cut your risk of heart disease by 30 percent!

2 Allow pets in the office

In today’s modern offices, everyone’s doing all kinds of crazy things, from shared workspaces to standing desks (another great idea). Some cool startups even have espresso-based drinks available all day, and beer on tap. There’s no need for you to go that far, especially considering that beer on tap isn’t going to be beneficial to anybody’s health, but here’s another idea: allowing pets in the office.

According to The Huffington Post, this makes the work environment less ruff (pun intended). They explain, “Bringing your pet to work has been shown to increase employee wellness through physical activity and stress relief. Plus, it’ll also give co-workers something to bond over.” As of March 2017, 89.7 million dogs were estimated to live in the US as household pets, so someone will have a pet to bring in and brighten the day.

3 Provide healthy snacks

Another easy way to be healthier in the office is by providing healthy snacks. Instead of having a business machine in the hall, bring in fresh fruits and vegetables for everyone to choose from. You don’t have to break the bank, either, by going crazy at Whole Foods: there are services like SnackNation that work directly with businesses to provide healthy food at a low price. The US weight loss market was worth $66 billion at the end of 2017, and you can understand why: we are constantly struggling with our health, and it’s hard to control it. But by making your office a healthier place for snacking, you can at least help yourself, and your work colleagues eat better during the workweek.

4 Encourage social media detoxing

A trending unhealthy habit–that is probably here to stay, unfortunately–is social media addiction. Close to half of the world’s population is on social media now, and we’re only going to get more connected over time. And somewhere like an office, where we’re constantly stressed and looking for a way to let off steam, it’s inevitable to reach for a phone to get some quick validation from the outside world.

So encourage your colleagues to put their phones aside. If they need a break, think of creative ways to do it, like allowing them some time to read a book or run an errand they’re stressed about running later during rush hour. Providing a little more flexibility will be greatly appreciated. Of course, confiscating phones is a bit extreme, but providing everyone with incentives not to be on their phones is helpful.
